Names including Asma ul Husna – 99 Names of Allah

Al Qur’an 20:8
“Allah! there is no god but He! To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names.”

Surely the best names are those which contain one of these Names of Allah that come at different places in Quran.
(See their Quranic references i.e Surah and Ayah Numbers here)

For boys these names are formed by adding Abd before one of Allah’s Name.
examples
Abd + Allah = Abdullah (Slave of Allah)
Abd + Ar-Rahman = Abd-ur-Rahman
Add + Al-Azeez = Abd-ul-Azeez
Names above are very common in boys but what many people don’t know is that girls can also be named like this by putting Amat in place of Abd
examples
Amat + Allah = Amatullah
Amat + Ar-Rahman = Amat-ur-Rahman
Amat + Al-Azeez = Amat-ul-Azeez

*Abd is the Arabic word for “Male Slave” and Amat for “Female Slave”
*note that “al” becomes “ul” and “ar” becomes “ur” applying the Arabic grammar rules for making compound words.
*further more here we are actually forming genitive compound (Murakkab Al Izafi) which creates a meaning like “noun1 OF noun2″
so our noun1 is always Abd or Amat and noun2 is any of the Names of Allah.

Following is a beautiful recitation of the 99 names of Allah by an Egyptian artist called Hisham Abbas. The 99 names of Allah are presented in a nice musical way to help you memorize them.

Muhammad or Mohamed

This one of the 2 given names of our last prophet from his parents, and the more famous one. It means “Someone who is highly praised”

Watch this, a special characteristic of the name “Muhammad” is told in the beginning

Moving forward, according to a Hadith prophet Muhammad (SAWW) once said to the Sahaba that you may name yourselves after my name but not after my Kuniyat “Abu Qasim” which means “Father of Qasim”. Some scholars say that this prohibition was only till the life of prophet but others believe it remains.

The name Muhammad is widely used in the Arab world but in the sub continent i.e. Pakistan, India, Bangladesh people use this name combining it with another name to form a first name or given name considering the fact that the name may be disrespected if the person bearing it is abused.
